Introducing John Downer [ 5 shirts. Lettering by John Downer. Art direction by Rick Klotz ]
John Downer is a sign painter by trade with a specialty in gold leaf lettering. He's also an accomplished swimmer and water polo player. His interest in letterforms began at a young age. In 1983 he began a career as a freelance type designer. He has since designed faces for renowned type publishers such as the Font Bureau, Bitstream, Emigre, and House Industries. The following is an article on his history, including examples of his typography, lettering work, and other stuff relevant to his opinions. And opinions he has, as John possesses both an acute sense and an eye for the crafts of lettering and type design. Excerpts from a lengthy interview conducted by typographer, writer, and printer Alastair Johnston accompany the images which follow. An unedited full version of the interview is accessible on the last page for all you lettering nerds out there.
